Miriam Hibel, Esq.
Director of Law
Miriam J. Hibel is the Director of Law at Brooklyn Defender Services, which she joined as one of the founding members in 1996. Miriam graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University in 1976, where she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa society and received Honors in American Studies. She obtained her juris doctor degree in 1979 from the New York University School of Law, where she was on staff at the Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif (for graduating in the top 10% of the class.)
Upon graduation from NYU Law, Miriam joined the Criminal Appeals Bureau of The Legal Aid Society, where she was quickly promoted to Senior Supervising Attorney (and met her husband, Hillard Wiese.) Before joining BDS, she taught Appellate Advocacy as an Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn Law School and took time off to write her book, New York Identification Law, which is considered to be the authoritative treatise on the subject. Miriam is also a frequent guest speaker at training programs and criminal law symposia throughout the state, including at seminars for judges held at the New York State Judicial Institute.
